It all STARTS with a vision of where you want to go. But as anyone with a vision board and zero bank balance knows, just visualizing is not all there is to the process of living your dreams!

I will get into this first step in the The Accelerator: Vision, in my FREE email course, but for now, I wanna address what I see as a big taboo subject in our community.

Now, look —I know talking about money and success is provocative for many of us yogis…. A lot of teachers I talk to don’t even wanna go there!

I think this is for two reasons.

1) The first is that as yogis we are drawn to a sense of service, caring for others, and sharing a message that is about happiness, freedom and balance in contrast to a materialistic, superficial world of chasing money and fame to be able to prop up the ego and buy unnecessary things that the  advertising media tries to persuade us we need!

We are part of a subculture that rebels against this in favor of a more wholesome, spiritual freedom and community based in more substantive values.

I agree with this ethos myself, and it is an organizing value in my life as well —but we still have to face the fact that we live in an economy where what you spend the bulk of your time doing for work simply has to pay your bills, feed your kids, and provide opportunities for you to have the free time to focus on inner work, personal growth and self actualization.

So, finding a reasonable way to reconcile earning a living with being a yogi who is committed to being of service is key.

2) The second reason is more psychological —try it on for size and see if it makes sense for you. it will for some and not for others, and that’s fine.

My sense is that we often struggle the hidden realities of teaching yoga for a living, like competition, inevitable politics at yoga studios, dealing with the learning curve of being open to marketing, and the uncertainty of being self-employed and relying on how many people show up to your classes as defining what the numbers on your paycheck look like.

All of this is very vulnerable and can create a lot of anxiety and/or resentment, fear of failure etc that we would understandably rather avoid….

Anyone can learn to overcome these fears, make them more manageable, and actually use them to drive being more disciplined, pro-active and realistic about the business side of teaching yoga for living —all while maintaining integrity and a commitment to being of service and being an impeccable teacher with great ethics and compassion, who also feeds their kids and earns enough to be able to take a vacation every now and again and not be stressed about money when it’s time to pay the rent!
